The first jeep encountered by Filipinos was the wartime vehicle used by American soldiers. After the war the surplus jeeps were disposed of to the Filipinos who transformed them into commercial transportation known as the "jeepney". Every jeepney is original in decoration from bumper to bumper. It is considered more wasteful since it sits fewer people and uses more gas compared to a bus. However, jeepneys are able to maneuver through the narrow streets of the city. There are about 27,000 crowding the streets of Metro Manila today. Due to the unemployment problem in the Philippines, the jeepney survives providing work not only for the drivers but for the body shops, painters, accessory makers and repairmen. |
