Kali, Escrima and Arnis are the three martial arts which originated
in the Philippines. They date back thousands of years, and were
originally combative in nature but were later preserved through dance,
theater, maintenance of physical health, and continued self-defense
strategies. Martial arts of the Philippines utilize Visayan stick and
blade fighting (Bastn y Bolo), sword and dagger (Espada y Daga),
double sticks (Sinawali/Doble Batones), grappling (Dumog), kicking
(Sikaran), punching (Panantukan) as well as empty hand work using
feet, hands, knees, elbows, throws, joint locking, pressure points,
pinching and biting.
Around 200 B.C. the Malays migrated to the Philippines from Asia, bringing with them expert fighting skills with the sword, dagger and spear. In the 19th century, trade with the Chinese brought many T'ang Dyanasty martial skills. This brought about a technology of empty hand fighting and weaponry uncomparable and far more effective than any other martial art. |
